Biography/History
Clifford R. Murphy is Director of Maryland Traditions. He received a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Brown University. Since 2008 he has served as the Program Director for Folk & Traditional Arts at the Maryland State Arts Council. With Elaine Eff, he served as Co-Director of Maryland Traditions from 2008-2011. In his work with Maryland Traditions, he has conducted fieldwork with musicians, music communities, and instrument makers as well as wide-ranging fieldwork throughout the state of Maryland in the areas material and occupational culture and foodways. He has dedicated projects in the areas of the legacy of the Appalachian Migration to Maryland, Piedmont blues, Irish music in Baltimore, and African-American sacred music. He has published on working-class and immigrant music, country music in New England, and theory and practice of fieldwork and public folklore. In 2010 he served on the programming committee of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s Asian-Pacific-Americans program which featured a wide range of Maryland artists. Since 2009 he has co-produced feature radio broadcasts with Aaron Henkin at WYPR (Baltimore) on living traditions in Maryland.
