Gilbert Andrews Sr. was from Machias, Maine. He started working in the Machias Lumber Company mill in the 1920s, beginning when he was thirteen. He also went to teacher's college after high school and worked summers in the mill to pay for it. In 1986, he was living in Franklin, Maine.
