Max Hunter was a self-taught folklorist from Springfield, Missouri. In the 1950s, he began traveling to the Ozarks region of Missouri and Arkansas and taping songs sung by longtime residents. By word of mouth and by driving along the back roads, Hunter found other people to sing for him. In the 1960s, he started recording fiddlers and fiddle tunes.
Many of these performers became friends of Hunter. He often returned to their homes to tape new material and other performers, and he also invited musicians to his home to record them. Hunter also took an interest in university students who were interested in folklore and had material to add to his collection.
