Administrative/Biographical History Element

Biographical Note

Daniel J. Crowley (1921-1998) was an eminent scholar of folklore, anthropology, and art history. Having served as professor of anthropology and art history for over thirty years at the University California, Crowley's contributions to the field of folklore, anthropology, art history are chronicled in his publications that include four books and over 350 articles and reviews. Professor Crowley's monograph I Could Talk Old-Story Good; Creativity in Bahamian Folklore is a classic example of a performance-centered folkloristic ethnography

While his fieldwork spanned Western Europe, South America, and Polynesia, Crowley was specifically interested in African and African diaspora communities, with a concentration in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean. Crowley's collections of folktales show a breadth of traditional tales from the Americas and Africa
