Scope and Content Note

The Utah State University Undergraduate Student Fieldwork Collection consists of approximately 1,200 projects collected by Utah State University students in fulfillment of graded credit requirements for an upper division undergraduate folklore course. Most items include title page, table of contents, cover essay, and several items (examples) of folklore which include: informant, context, text (the folklore item), texture (stylistic notation), and collector data. Collector and informant release forms accompany most of the collections from 1986 forward

The projects examine a wide variety of topics ranging from specific genres (like jokes, legends, beliefs, folksongs) to area interests (such as regional, occupational, family folklore). The finding aid includes: item number, title, description (number of items or interviews, media/images, and release form informaiton), student name, content description. Items are numbered by the year the student submitted the project to their instructor and the individual number of the item. For example, FOLK COLL 8a: USU 97-02, references the second item accessioned in 1997. The items are stored in archival boxes. The materials do NOT circulate.
