Documents the Louisiana World Exposition through a collection of materials produced directly from it as well as those from the Folklife Commission, Jean Lafitte National Historical Park, and the Louisiana Folklife Festival Pavilion. These include financial materials, correspondence, schedules, signage, feasibility studies, NEA grant materials, outlines, proposals, draft resolutions, press releases and newspaper clippings; also included is a five minute promotional slide presentation produced by the LWE and recorded onto a U-MATIC video tape and 42 cassette tapes containing recordings from performances and interviews at the exposition.
Opening in May of 1984 and running until November of that year, the Louisiana World Exposition was located on 81.4 acres of the riverfront and Warehouse District of New Orleans. The theme for the exposition was "The World of Rivers - Fresh Water as a Source of Life". Although 7.3 million people attended, the Exposition was considered by many to be a financial failure due to lack of attendance.
Located in the Federal Fibre Mills building, the Louisiana Folklife Festival Pavilion featured demonstrations and performances by Louisianan artists and craftspeople as well as cultural heritage exhibits. Blacksmiths, woodworkers, and weavers performed their work in a small brick building of the courtyard known as “La Fabrique”. The courtyard also featured construction of a pirogue and a Creole Skiff. The main stage of the LFFP, Club La Bas, featured daily music and films by local artists during the Exposition.
