General Note
The Alabama Community Scholars Institute (ACSI) was started in 2004 by the Alabama Folklife Association (AFA) to teach amateur folklorists how to conduct fieldwork by interviewing folk artists in a given area. The AFA sponsors the institute every two years in a different location in Alabama. The 2006 ACSI was held in Florence, Ala. The interviews were conducted in the region of North Ala. known as Muscle Shoals, which consists of four closely linked cities: Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, and Muscle Shoals. Muscle Shoals is best known for its ties to the popular music industry, as many famous artists have recorded hit songs in the area.
