Summary

Collection consists of a small self-published booklet of poetry, “Our Nevada Of Verse,” (1941) containing 55 poems, also three picture postcards from the 1930s-1940s pertaining to western poet, Harry Harker. One of the postcards describes Harker as “Nevada Cowboy, Poet and Songwriter.” Little is known about Harker, but information in the booklet indicates he was from Elks, Nevada [sic] and Hollywood, California. An envelope with one of the postcards shows he was from Elko. Some of the poems may be autobiographical, although Harker wrote in the Preface that names in the book are fictitious and do not refer to real persons. One of the postcards depicts a man on horseback handing a letter to a girl standing beside the horse. The caption on the back of the card identifies the girl as Joyce Reed, “age nine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Reed of Paradise Valley, Nev., owner of the famous 4R Ranch.” All items in the collection were purchased for the Western Folklife Center Archives by the archivist, Steve Green, mostly through online auction websites.
