Richard Gaddis worked along the Machias and East Machias rivers beginning in 1937. His family had a lumbering and blueberry business. He was in the Marines during WWII. Afterwards, he came back to Maine and went back to lumber and blueberry work. In 1986, he was still working in blueberries and living in East Machias, Maine.
