Harry Dyer was born in Beechwood, New Brunswick as the youngest of three children. His father ran a ferry on the Tobique River. He worked in lumber camps along the river from age 12 to around 23 or 24, 1908-1920. He fought in WWI although he wasn't old enough. At twenty-four, he moved to Caribou, Maine and lived there the rest of his life, first working for a garage and then running his own. He retired in 1961. He was married and had six children.
