Summary

This collection contains audiovisual material on Missouri folk music. The project was supported by grants from the Missouri Arts Council and the University of Missouri-Columbia Development Fund. The video cassettes were produced by the Academic Support Center in co-operation with the Depart-ment of Germanic and Slavic Studies.

The Missouri Origins Project was developed to study contributions of the many ethnic groups that settled in Missouri. Adolf E. Schroeder, professor in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies, headed the project which was supported by grants from the Missouri Arts Council and the University of Missouri-Columbia Development Fund. This particular part of the project, dating from 1981 to 1984, dealt primarily with Anglo-American folk music and resulted in three programs that were available to television stations and groups. Those programs were: "Down In Missouri With Loman Cansler," "Max Hunter: Ozark Song Collector," and "Ballads, Bones, and Fiddle Tunes."

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Missouri Origins Project Collection consists of correspondence, scripts, and video cassettes. The major part of the collection is video cassettes. Both finished programs and field recordings are included. The video cassettes have been arranged chronologically by program. Each program tape is followed by the field recordings, arranged chronologically, which were used in that program.
"Down In Missouri With Loman Cansler" features Cansler, a folk song collector and per-former from Kansas City. The field recordings include interviews and performances in various locations including North Kansas City High School.
"Max Hunter: Ozark Song Collector" examines Hunter's efforts to preserve folk music from the Ozarks region of Missouri and Arkansas. The field recordings include interviews in Hunter's home and performances in various locations including Wilson's Creek National Battlefield and the Springfield-Greene County Public Library.

"Ballads, Bones, and Fiddle Tunes" provides an overview of the folk music, musicians, and instruments of Missouri. This program features many Missouri musicians including Taylor McBaine, Sterling Kelley, Loman Cansler, Max Hunter, Judy Domeny, Art Galbraith, and Gordon McCann.

The correspondence, arranged chronologically, covers the administration of the grants that supported the project as well as the arrangements that were made with the many performers featured in the programs. The scripts are arranged by program and include revised versions. The miscellaneous material includes items relating to production costs of the programs.
